What is FOM

Fermented organic manure is an organic manure made by fermenting organic materials such as plant waste products, animal dung, and other biological wastes. This process is microbial degradation of the material whereby the material is decomposed into a nutrient solution. Fermentation enhances the solubility of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other nutrients hence easy for the plants to utilize.

Mechanism of action

The active principle of Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) is a natural technique that boosts soil nutrient value and plants’ health. At Gangour Group, we advocate for the application of FOM as a means of enhancing agricultural management practices in an eco- friendly way. In the fermentation process, plant and animal waste are decomposed by useful bacteria fungi, and other microorganisms. This leads to the formation of humus which is nutrient rich and improves the quality of the soil.

  • Microbial Decomposition: Most of the microorganisms we find in the soil help decompose organic materials including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
  • Nutrient Release: When organic matter decomposes, nutrients that are required by plants are released which in turn enhance the growth and development of plants.
  • Improved Soil Structure: FOM improves the water-holding capacity of the soil, aeration, root penetration, and ultimately the growth of the plant.
  • Long-Term Fertility: Different from synthetic fertilizers, FOM slowly enhances the quality of soil health to boost fertility in the long run without frequent application.
  • Natural Growth Support: FOM enhances the biological activity of soil organisms, enhances the biological density of the soil, and supports sustainable farming.

General Dosage for Crops

  • For field crops, it is recommended that 5-10 tons of FOM per hectare be used.
  • For vegetables and fruits, optimum rates range from 2 to 5 tons per hectare for the control of parasites

Application Method:

  • FOM can be applied during soil preparation before planting, or it can be top-dressed during the growing season.
  • For trees and large crops, use 1-2 kg per plant depending upon the size and age of the plant.

Soil Testing:

  • It is advisable to do a soil test to know the best amount of nutrients and adjust the dosage accordingly.
  • Overuse of FOM can cause nutrient imbalances which is why it is advised to follow proper application of FOM.
